Aquaman is directed by James Wan. The movie tells the story of Arthur Curry, a half-human, half-atlantean. When Atlantis is considering war with the human world, Arthur has to claim his rightful heir to the throne to end all war between the two worlds. The movie stars Jason Mamoa, Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe and Patrick Wilson.
Let me start by saying that I went into this movie reluctantly as their was a “situation” so I ended up having to watch this movie and let’s just say I would’ve preferred anything else. However I know that I can’t simply judge a movie because I wasn’t in the mood to watch it. With Aquaman I got exactly what I expected which means it’s pretty much an average superhero movie disguised as a visually beautiful experience.
If I had to describe the plot, script and characters of Aquaman in one word, it would be lazy. Aquaman is heavily cliched, insanely predictable and all too familiar. However it is one of the most gorgeous looking superhero movies I’ve ever seen. Also while those things that I mentioned are done lazily, the action is pretty entertaining and creative. The visual feast also helps the adventure aspect of the story quite well, as every new setting they have is visually explored in a gorgeous way.
The cast is mostly fine, it’s the characters which are flawed, and not flawed in like personality way. They are two-dimensional characters. Arthur is basically a more cocky sea version of Thor. Mera is just there to serve two purposes, be Arthur’s love interest and save him multiple times. The villain or should I say villains because this movie doesn’t even try when it comes to that are just average villains. They do give them a motive to be evil but still it’s a motive we’ve seen a thousand times.
Speaking of too many villains, this movie has such an unnecessarily long runtime. I never wanted to end. I feel like most modern movies think that if they’re longer they’re automatically better. It’s not true whatsoever. A Quiet Place is only an hour and a half and it’s a masterpiece in my opinion. If the movie took out all of Black Manta and kept him for the sequel and just focused on Ocean-Master, it would’ve easily lost twenty minutes on unnecessary footage.
So far I’ve mostly said negative stuff about the movie but even though I stand by what I said, the movie is honestly a fun ride and it will most probably win you over by the end. It’s not a movie which I would rewatch, at least not all the way through. It’s the kind of movie you would put on as some kind of background just because it looks nice. It would be the perfect movie to show off a huge TV especially if it’s a 4K TV. A lot of people will go nuts for this movie, it’s fun and gorgeous and action-packed. Kids will definitely love it, adults will treat this movie like an average Marvel movie, meaning they’ll laugh at the funny parts, love the emotional parts and when the movie ends they call it a day and that’s it.
Overall, Aquaman impresses when it comes to action, visuals and costumes. Everything else is pretty average. Some people only want to have a good time and they’ll get that from this movie. Other people who want something original might not enjoy this movie. It’s one of those movies which you either love or think it’s just ok. To me it’s just ok.
