SPOILER FREE REVIEW!
vengers: Endgame is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, it is the culmination of the past twenty-one movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After the tragic ending of Avengers: Infinity War, the remaining Avengers will look for a way to restore what Thanos’s actions have destroyed. This movie stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Karen Gillan and Josh Brolin.
After the massive cliffhanger from Infinity War, millions of people including myself were undeniably waiting for this movie. We wanted to see what happens next, where this story could possibly go. For the most part Marvel had success after success with every movie they release. They built a trust with the audience that guaranteed they will enjoy their movie. We’ve come to expect movies of a certain standard because of that and for the most part they exceed expectations. I was legitimately shaking before the movie started. I even kept myself from being spoiled which is really rare since it’s so easy for me to be tempted. I had sky high expectations, a heart beating faster than it should and a nervous look on my face. However when the movie ended I was left a bit underwhelmed and I was extremely disappointed that that is how I felt after watching this movie.
Endgame is by no means a bad movie. It’s just not the movie I wanted or was expecting. It’s not really a flaw. That being said this movie does have a couple flaws. I was confused by some of the choices that were made. What surprised me the most was that Infinity War had much better pacing, which is weird since that movie had twice the characters. You can tell they wanted to take their time with the scenes. The second act of this movie was especially long in my opinion, the worst part was that we knew what was going to happen but the movie wanted it to feel like there was a possibility that it couldn’t.
Also I felt like the big battle in this movie was way shorter and less memorable apart from some scenes. I do have a couple more flaws to talk about but that’s for my spoiler review. Another thing which bothered me was that there were some situations which have boggled our minds as to how they will be resolved and in this movie it come off as a bit lazy. I’ll discuss this very scene in the spoiler review.
That being said, there are also tons of positives in this movie. This movie is just as gorgeous to look at as Infinity War. There is a specific shot which includes a reflection in someone’s eye and it stuck with me. It was so cinematic and magical even though it lasted for a few seconds. The visuals were top-notch, everything in terms of visuals in this movie look amazing. lan Silvestri returns and knocks it out of the park with the musical score. The score accompanies the movie perfectly creating the needed tone. The script too also has a ton of surprises which will have any fan, big or small, gasp with excitement or horror.
Speaking of horror, there were scenes where I was tense as if I was watching a horror movie. The suspense and level of thrills in this movie are pretty high. The Russo Brothers were always great at capturing that sense of danger and fatality, even with these characters. I felt it in Civil War, Infinity War but especially in Endgame. Unfortunately Thanos isn’t that compelling this time, he feels more like a parody of himself in Infinity War. That being said, he is still the best MCU villain to date. Josh Brolin still gives a menacing performance, it’s the script which lacks.
Now I know that the actors of the Marvel Cinematic Universe are good, but in this movie they are excellent. Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Chris Evans are amazing in this movie. Downey Jr. though gave his best performance as Iron Man in this movie. He gave the character a side to him we haven’t seen that much lately and even though I am more of a Captain America fan, he stole the show for me. The same goes for Black Widow and Hawkeye, I never really cared for them but this movie made me love them! I can’t wait for that Black Widow movie and the Hawkeye Disney+ show!
I look at this movie and see a movie about love, loss, guilt and revenge. The movie is at it’s peak when it focuses on those aspects of the story. That being said it isn’t an overtly dark and depressing movie thanks to Paul Rudd who also delivers an excellent performance balancing both humor and dramatic scenes perfectly. As a final chapter in this Infinity Saga I am pleased. I love how things ended for most of the characters. I am a bit torn on how they ended the movie though. But aside from that, the final hour of this movie is a love letter to Marvel and it’s fans, it is epic, satisfying and heartbreaking.
Overall vengers: Endgame wasn’t the movie I expected but that didn’t stop it from being a great movie. Though the pacing is uneven and the script could be improved with a few tiny changes, this is still a superbly acted movie with high stakes, stunning visuals and a story for the ages. It may not live up to the hype or surpass Infinity War but as a finale to Marvel’s Infinity Saga, it is sure to please a lot of fans.
